Dear UVM Medical Center Security Officers United Members,
I am writing this to officially welcome you into an affiliation with Teamsters Local no. 597. We look forward to working with you towards the goal of a strong contract for all the officers in the department.
We are what is called a ‘general’ union. We already represent members across a broad spectrum of industries including but not limited to public safety, food processing, manufacturing, warehousing, busing and multiple types of delivery service employees.
Our membership fluctuates seasonally with a peak usually of about eleven hundred active members during the winter and a trough of about 900 active members during the summer, so we are fully staffed to assist and support members year-round. We currently have four staff working, three of whom are mobile staff assisting around the state and we have a strong strike fund to provide benefits during work stoppages which is the result of years of steady investment.
As many of you read in our merger agreement, we want you to feel welcome and have created a separate division of our local union to facilitate healthy discussion and solidarity amongst any members in the security industry that join local 597.
We hold regular meetings and we encourage you all to join our website (see above) and make use of the forum boards and blogs available to you there to discuss issues leading up the negotiation of your first contract.
